The test of competence is specific to the appropriate nursing field or midwifery and always consists of two parts. Test blueprints are available on the official NMC website with links to online resources, which will help applicants to prepare for the test of competence. We do not endorse any course or training provider offering preparation materials for the test but we assist the eligible candidates to pass the test.
The NMC is introducing a new Test of Competence in August 2021. They have produced practice tests to help you check your understanding and readiness for the new CBT and learn more about the question format, style, and level of difficulty.
The questions are specifically written for the practice tests and the content is mapped to the seven platforms of the Future Nurse standards and to the six domains of the Future Midwife standards. The CBT comprises 115 questions. All questions are scored as correct or incorrect, and there is no partial credit. Part A will comprise a 15-mark numeracy assessment. Part B will be a 100-mark theory assessment. The length of the CBT is 3 hours, and this includes any breaks from testing, which are optional.
The practice tests for numeracy are the same as the live exams in that there are 15 questions of applied numeracy set in a nursing or midwifery context. The nursing numeracy exams as well as the practice tests contain both generic numeracy questions and numeracy questions set in either an adult, child, mental health or learning disabilities setting.
The clinical practice tests differ from the live exams in that the practice test contains 50 clinical questions instead of 100. Each field specific clinical practice test consists of 45 generic questions and 5 questions that are specific to either adult, child, mental health or learning disabilities.
You can take the practice tests as many times as you want. The practice test is timed in order to replicate similar exam conditions. You’ll have 30 minutes to complete the numeracy practice tests and 1 hour 15 minutes to complete the clinical practice tests.
Once you have completed the practice test, you will be able to see which questions you got correct. There will also be an information button for each question in the clinical practice test that you can click on to see to which part of the blueprint the question is linked to.
Selecting the right exam and modules The exam codes that match each application type are:
• Adult nurse – RNA
• Mental health nurse - RNMH
• Learning disabilities nurse - RNLD
• Children’s nurse - RNC
• Midwife - RM
The OSCE is designed to assess your ability to competently apply your professional nursing or midwifery skills and knowledge in the UK. It is set at the level expected of nurses and midwives as they enter the profession (at the point of registration). We do not endorse any course or training provider offering preparation materials for the test but we assist the eligible candidates to pass the test.
The new OSCE has 10 stations:
Four stations will continue to be linked together around a scenario: the APIE (one station for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation)
Four stations to test skills (two pairs of two skills)
Two new stations to assess the candidate's values and behaviors and evidence-based practice.
PLAB 1 : The exam tests your ability to apply your knowledge for the care of patients.
PLAB 2 : is an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE).
The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test, or the PLAB test, helps us to make sure doctors who are qualified abroad have the right knowledge and skills to practice medicine in the UK. There are two parts to the PLAB test. We do not endorse any course or training provider offering preparation materials for the test but we assist the eligible candidates to pass the test.
